Tools Required

Before you get into the actual installation process, you should ensure you have all the necessary equipment. Here are some things you will need:

  • Floor jack/car jack
  • Jack stands (not required, but suitable for extra safety)
  • Socket wrench set or impact drill set
  • Screwdriver

Safety Precautions

Although golf carts are lighter than cars, they are still heavy, and you don't want one to fall on you. As a result, you should take a few extra steps to keep yourself safe.

  1. Make sure your parking brake is on
  2. Chock your wheels (rear or front, depending on what wheels and tires you are changing)

Changing Your Golf Cart Wheel and Tire Combo: Step By Step

With those essential details out of the way, let's get into the actual installation process. We are going to walk you through each part of the process step by step to the end to make sure you get this done right.

  • Step 1: Use the screwdriver to pop off the wheel's hubcap
  • Step 2: Once you have access to the lug nuts, loosen but DO NOT remove the lug nuts.
  • Step 3: Jack the golf cart off the ground just high enough to remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    • For proper jack placement, find the leaf spring plate or another stable surface under the front or rear of the golf cart.
    • If you have them, place and secure your jack stands on a stable surface under the cart.
  • Step 4: With the cart securely off the ground, finish removing the lug nuts from the golf cart wheel.
  • Step 5: If you have push-through center caps, push those through the rear of the golf cart wheel, so the center cap is facing outward. If you have snap-in center caps, you can install them after the wheel and tire combo is completely mounted.
  • Step 6: Take the new wheel and tire assembly and mount it onto the golf cart's wheel hub.
  • Step 7: With the wheel and tire combo on the hub assembly, hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the hub.
  • Step 8: Once the lug nuts hand tightened, use your socket wrench or impact drill to tighten the lug nuts completely. It is recommended to use the star pattern when tightening.
    • Pro-Tip: After you tighten the lug nuts, double-check that your wheel doesn't wobble. Sometimes if you aren't careful, you can tighten the wheel at an angle and pinch one of the corners of the hub cap, causing your wheel to be improperly mounted.
  • Step 9: Once the lug nuts are tightened down, drop the golf cart off the lift and/or floor jacks.
  • Step 10: With the golf cart on the ground, give the lug nuts one final tighten.

Well that's it! You now know how to change out your golf cart's wheels and tires!
