    What is an Airless Tire?

Airless tires, or NPTs (non-pneumatic tires) are tires or tire and wheel assemblies that are not supported by air pressure. The most popular types of airless tires are foam-filled tires and run-flats.

Foam-filled tires are most commonly found on forklifts and on bicycles to prevent flats. Run-flat tires are a newer option for automotive vehicles that allows you to travel around 50 miles at 50 MPH so you can get to a safe place to change the tire. These are typically designed with a heavily-reinforced sidewall that continues to support the tire after a puncture.

    What is a TWEEL®?

    TWEEL Spokes Flexing on Curb

Introduced by Michelin in 2005, theMichelin® X® TWEEL®(a tire and wheel assembly) is a single unit replacing the current tire, wheel, and valve assembly. It replaces the 23 components of a typical radial tire and is comprised of a rigid hub connected to a shear band by means of flexible, deformable polyurethane spokes and a tread band, all functioning as a single unit.

In addition to pioneering this revolutionary airless tire technology, the TWEEL®alsopropels Michelin’s®vision of environmental responsibility. By producing a wheel and tire assembly that lasts 3 times longer than traditional tires, we save that much more waste from ending up in our landfills.

    TWEEL® Fast Facts:

    • No modification is required to add the Michelin® X® Tweel® to any non-lifted golf cart.
    • Special comfort design provides a more cushioned ride vs. the standard pneumatic tire.
    • Higher cost upfront, but delivers 2-3x the tread life of regular golf cart tires, for a lower lifetime cost.
    • The unique spoke design helps dampen the ride for enhanced rider comfort when driving over gravel, uneven pavement, and bumps, all while easily ejecting dirt and debris.
    • Designed to provide excellent traction and stability.

    History of the Michelin® X® TWEEL®

It was over lunch in the late 1990s when Dr. Tim Rhyne and Steve Crohn, both engineers with Michelin, had the idea of challenging pneumatic tire technology and exploring new and revolutionary concepts for this essential mobility component was born. The two inventors ultimately sketched out a viable radial tire that didn’t require any air.“It was a eureka moment,” said Dr. Rhyne, and in 2005, they brought the technology to the world.
