Taking your family to the beach, cruising to your favorite local café, attending the annual festival in town, and visiting your friends across the neighborhood are all popular and excellent ways to use your low-speed vehicle. It’s how few aftermarket accessories it will take to get you there that is both surprising and motivating!
In most states*, golf carts equipped with basic safety accessories such as lights, mirrors, windshields, and seat
belts are legal to safely operate on public roadways where the posted speed limit is 35 mph (50 km/h) or less.
If you’re a fellow Hoosier Golf Cart enthusiast, you can find your minimum street legal golf cart requirements here. If you hail from a great state other than Indiana, this will give you a good idea of what may be required on your cart but we strongly encourage you to find a similar reputable source or contact your local municipality to ensure your cart complies.
Light kits are essential if you want your golf cart to be able to legally drive on your neighborhood's roads and pathways. When getting your cart inspected and registered, lights will be one of the first things that get checked. It is important to know that it isn't just any light that counts; more likely than not, you will be required to have a cart that has lights with turn signal and brake light capability, as well as a horn. When equipped with these components, your golf cart transforms into a low-speed vehicle that can effectively signal your next driving maneuvers to other golf cart drivers, cars, and pedestrians. This signaling ability takes your driving experience to a new level as you can now maneuver through just about any location safely and efficiently. Our GCS™ Instamatic® street-legal light kits give you all of these components to get you lighting up the streets on your next evening cruise.
Another critical piece of a street-legal golf cart is its mirrors. Often, street-legal golf carts require both a rearview mirror and side mirrors, but in some locations, you can have just one. Like your car, mirrors on your golf cart let you see everything behind you, and you can know whether there are other golf carts or vehicles following you that you need to be aware of. We carry universal side mirrors and LED turn signal side mirrors that attach to your front roof struts. In addition, we sell various rearview mirrors, such as regular "automotive" style and 5-panel, that you can choose from to suit your personal preference and/or legal requirements.
Windshields definitely make the list of essential components for getting your golf cart registered and inspected to be street legal. Windshields are vital as they protect you and your passengers from flying insects, debris, and other hazards that could harm you or impact your vision and driving ability, putting others at risk. If you are concerned about a golf cart windshield limiting your view or your ability to enjoy nice weather, there is no need to worry as most windshields hinge in the middle allowing you to go back and forth between an open and a closed view so you can get the best of both worlds! The windshields we sell are available in clear and tinted versions giving you an added element of personalization.
The #1 ultimate safety feature required by most municipalities, is the seat belt. It is probably no surprise that golf carts looking to get the coveted street-legal status are required to have seat belts installed. By securing you and your passengers, seat belts help ensure no one leaves your cart "at the wrong time." Be aware that if you have a rear seat installed, you may be required to have seat belts installed there as well.
A small but important piece to the LSV golf cart puzzle, golf cart reflex reflectors provide additional visual components to help make sure your golf cart gets seen when it is out on the roads- especially at night. By reflecting the light from streetlamps or other vehicle lights, reflectors add that extra bit of safety to put your mind at ease. You should check with your local transportation department before installing the reflectors as there may be certain spots on your cart where they need to be.
Those are the absolute must-have essentials to get you ready for the road. But, do you really want to call it done with just the bare minimum? We didn’t think so.
As a matter of fact, there are a lot of reasons to keep researching aftermarket golf cart accessories! It’s important to think about how you will be using your street legal LSV golf cart and what other accessories may complement that… For large families or folks with a lot of friends, a rear seat will be vital.
