Steps to Wire Golf Cart Lights
We put together the most crucial steps for how to wire golf cart lights that you should read before starting. These helpful tips will make the process easier and limit the likelihood of accidents.
If you're troubleshooting golf cart lights that won't work correctly, make sure to read this article and see if you can solve your problem there!
Disconnect Battery
The first thing you should do before installing a new light kit on your golf cart is to disconnect the battery. Safely remove the black wire from the negative battery terminal to ensure no power is flowing through the battery until it's time to power on the lights.
Position Lights and Switch
If your golf cart light kit came with a template for light placement, it's now time to draw and cut that out. If you do not have a template or your lights do not require cutting the body, loosely mount the lights in their proper position on the golf cart. (A second set of eyes will come in handy here!)
Next, you'll drill the hole for the headlight switch; the toggle you'll use to power the headlights while driving. Choose the position recommended in your instructions, or copy where similar make/model golf carts have their headlight switch mounted.
Wiring Light Kits
- Feed all connectors and wiring harness from lights to the battery compartment
- Connect tail lights and brake timer relay
- Install and connect push-pull switch for light kit
- Connect headlights
- Connect the wiring harness to a battery (or batteries) to ensure the proper voltage.

Finally, plug in the negative terminal and flip the toggle switch to see if the lights turn on. If headlights beam the path in front of you, you’re golden.
